PostSubject: Boston: Greatest Hits - original release 1997 (full album)    FULL ALBUMS EmptySat Oct 12, 2013 3:37 pm

1997 features songs originally released on both the Epic and MCA labels, as well as three previously unreleased recordings ("Higher Power", "Tell Me", and "The Star-Spangled Banner"). Tom Scholz, the band's leader, felt that the album's sound quality was not up to his standards, so a remastered version of the album was released in 2009 with a slightly different track listing, although many audiophiles will argue that the original 1997 issue eclipses the current one.

Track Listing:

01: Tell Me - 0:00
02: Higher Power - 4:05
03: More Than a Feeling - 9:11
04: Peace of Mind - 13:55
05: Don't Look Back - 19:01
06: Cool the Engines - 24:58
07: Livin' for You - 29:34
08: Feelin' Satisfied - 34:31
09: Party - 38:42
10: Foreplay/Long Time - 42:50
11: Amanda - 50:39
12: Rock & Roll Band - 54:54
13: Smokin' - 57:55
14: A Man I'll Never Be - 1:02:17
15: Star-Spangled Banner/4th Of July Reprise - 1:08:49
16: Higher Power [Kalodner edit] - 1:11:34

Blackfoot-Strikes Full Album

The first of what many Blackfoot fans would call Blackfoot's trio of essential masterpieces, "Strikes," "Tomcattin'," & "Marauder." It's hard to argue with these three albums, for they are the pinnacle of Blackfoot's great catalog, & with the exception of the killer, "Highway Song Live," this is the essential Blackfoot!

I bought "Strikes" when it came out in 1979. Though not as heavy as the two albums after it, "Strikes" walloped my ear drums with the heaviest southern rock I'd heard yet. As a matter of fact, you could say that Blackfoot started a new sub-genre, southern heavy metal, though bands like ZZ Top & their roster mates, Point Blank, were damn heavy at times, there has always been a disagreement whether these to bands actually were true southern rock, but that's an argument for another time.

"Strikes" starts out with the rubber melting to the road, "Road Fever," with it's chunky, funky, heavy riffs. A wake up call from a band firing on all cylinders! The melodic cover, "I Got A Line On You," is the best version of this song I ever heard! "Left Turn On A Red Light," is just quintessential southern rock! Heart & soul! "Pay My Dues," is a hard rocking tribute to the life of the band, or any band that has worked long & hard to get where their at. "Baby Blue," is infectious southern rock! Blackfoot beats Free at their own game with their cover of Free's, "Wishing Well." "Run & Hide," is just another beautiful southern rock ballad, on par with "Left Turn On A Red Light", though I detect a little Aerosmith vibe here. "Train Train," written by Ricky Medlocke's Uncle, Shorty Medlocke, is a high energy locomotive, tracking through your ears, down to your wiggling butt, then out your thumping feet! A Blackfoot classic! Then there is the epic "Highway Song," which ranks right up there with the greatest southern rock ever made! "Highway Song" is a true southern rock power ballad, before the term "power ballad" was ever coined. This song transcends all boundaries, all sub-genres of rock n' roll, to be one of the greatest songs ever written! It ranks with the like of "Freebird," to songs like, "Stairway To Heaven," & "Dream On," to be in the top echelon of the greatest 70's power ballads ever conceived! A true monolithic icon! But none of this would be achievable without the masterful twin lead guitars of Ricky Medlocke & Charlie Hargrett. Nor would it be conceivable with out the killer rhythm section of Jackson Spires & Greg T. Walker! Most of all, the quintessential whiskey blues soaked vocals, of Ricky Medlocke, who not only gets my vote as the finest singer in southern rock, but one of the finest singers in all of rock n' roll!

Yes, "Strikes" is a great place to start for anyone with even a iota curiosity about Blackfoot! Once you get into "Strikes," you'll have to have it all, for Blackfoot is not only the greatest unsung southern rock band, they just may well be the greatest southern rock band ever to grace my ears!

1. Road Fever
2. I Got A Line On You
3. Left Turn On A Red Light
4. Pay My Dues
5. Baby Blue
6. Wishing Well
7. Run And Hide
8. Train, Train (Prelude)
9. Train, Train
10. Highway Song
