Southern Gentlemen - Exotic Dancer Blues
The first thing that pops into my mind & ears when I listen to Southern Gentlemen is Robin Trower, big time Robin Trower, second thing is Gary Moore, hard & heavy blues/rock Gary Moore.
Guitarist Dave Chastain wears his influences loud & proud, & is more than capable of doing them justice. His thick tone, shimmering sustains, & phrasings are outstanding in that 70's guitar hero of yore style. Chastain also sings, & just like his guitar playing, his vocals are reminiscent of James Dewar (Robin Trower) & Gary Moore, a bluesy soulful baritone. To bad Dave's song writing can't quite match his guitar & vocal capabilities, that is not to say the songs are bad on Southern Gentlemen's "Double Your Pleasure," some are very good, but as a whole they seem to run together to seamlessly, everything begins to sound the same, especially if your not paying attention. I for one love this type of music, but for the listener that is just casually interested, this album may seem a hair repetitive in the middle & latter sections. For the person who loves heavy duty blues/rock, "Double Your Pleasure," will pack plenty of wallop, not as much as Robin Trower of the 70's, but certainly more than Robin Trower of the 80's to the present, & I don't know about you, but that's a good thing in my book!
